This collection of modern essays by leading figures in the field of Shakespeare scholarship reveals the interplay between contemporary theoretical approaches psychoanalytic, new historicist, feminist and cultural materialist and the study of the play in performance, both in Shakespeare's time and our own. Examining the representation of power, ideology, class, race and gender in a wide range of playtexts and theatrical contexts, the essays explore Shakespeare's performance possibilities in theory and in practice.

This is an excellent book for those studying Shakespeare, giving an in depth perspective on performance techniques, stage presence and discussions other than those relating to textual analysis and criticism. Well worth buying if looking to examine how Shakespeare would have been performed, the contemporary changes to performance over the years and how it has led to changes in interpretation.
